We’re so lucky to have access to many alternative period care products that allow us to have a more comfortable period - reusable cloth pads, menstrual cups, period underwear and even period sponges!
They’re a less common option that is raved about by many who love the way that sponges allow them to exercise, continue their lifting routine during their period, and have non-messy period sex.
How does a period sponge work?
Period sponges (or menstrual sponges) are an alternative to tampons, worn inside the body to absorb menstrual flow. You can choose bleached or unbleached natural, reusable fine silk sea sponges or single-use, disposable synthetic sponges. Many people choose to use period sponges because they cannot be seen from outside the body (no tampon strings) and can be worn during sex.
Prolapse sponges can also be used to support the pelvic organs if you are dealing with prolapse.
How long can you wear a menstrual sponge?
You should change your sponge every 8 hours, or sooner if you have a heavy flow. This is a similar amount of time to other internal period products like menstrual cups and tampons.
Natural sea sponges vs. synthetic sponges
When it comes to menstrual sponges, you have two options: a natural sea sponge or a synthetic sponge.
Let's take a look at the factors which may influence your decision on which one you choose.
1. Material
Reusable Sea Menstrual Sponges:
If you prefer an environmentally friendly option for your period, you may wish to choose a natural menstrual sea sponge. Sea sponges are organic, sustainably harvested and are naturally soft and absorbent. They can be bleached or left in their natural state, which is darker in colour. Because they are natural, they may contain tiny marine debris initially, which you remove before use.
How are sea sponges harvested?
We only stock sea sponges that have been sustainably and ethically harvested from the Mediterranean Sea. This is done by carefully monitoring the areas where harvesting has taken place and allowing time for the sponges to re-grow before any re-harvesting occurs. When the sponges are harvested, they are trimmed in such a way that it doesn’t damage the ‘stem’ or the sea sponge, which allows them to grow back. Kind of like pruning a tree or trimming your grass!
Should I choose a bleached or unbleached natural sponge?
It really comes down to personal preference. Unbleached menstrual sea sponges are light brown in colour and are a good choice for those who want a completely natural option for their period, whereas some prefer the ‘clean’, more yellow appearance of a bleached sponge. Natural, unbleached sponges will generally deteriorate at a slower rate than bleached sponges.
Disposable Artificial Menstrual Sponges:
Made from synthetic materials (polyurethane, polyester, or vegetable cellulose, or a combination of these materials) and are designed to mimic natural sponges. They are pre-sterilised, ready to use, and intended for single use only.
Some are pre-lubricated and have a slit cut in them, which acts as a finger grip to assist with removal.
Synthetic period sponges are popular for use during period sex or while exercising as an alternative to tampons. Remember, single-use sponges should be discarded after use and should never be reused.
2. Use
Reusable Sea Menstrual Sponges:
Reusable sea sponges are a soft, eco-friendly alternative to tampons. To use them, simply wet the sponge, squeeze it out to soften the texture, and insert it as you would a tampon. The sponge will absorb your menstrual flow and should be rinsed before reinsertion. With proper care, natural sponges can be reused for 3–6 months and composted at the end of their life, making them a sustainable choice. Like tampons, absorbency depends on the size of the sponge—the larger the sponge, the more it can hold. Because they’re a natural product, no two sponges are exactly alike, but they can be trimmed to fit your body comfortably.
Cleaning Reusable Sponges
If you opt for a reusable menstrual sponge, cleaning it properly is essential. Always sanitise your sponge before the first use and between cycles. There are a few safe methods to choose from:
- Wash with mild soap under warm, clean water (a menstrual cup wash works well).
- Soak for 10 minutes in a mixture of one part vinegar to ten parts water.
- Soak for 10 minutes in a cup of water with one tablespoon of baking soda.
No matter which method you use, always allow the sponge to dry completely before storing it in its pouch.
What to Avoid
To keep your sponge in the best condition, avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals, as these can damage the delicate fibres and upset your vaginal pH. Boiling is also not recommended, as it causes the sponge to shrink and harden. Be mindful not to soak your sponge longer than suggested, since over-soaking can weaken its structure.
Usage Tips for Reusable Sponges
Reusable sponges must be sanitised before the first use. Always wet and compress the sponge before inserting, and change it every 4–6 hours. They are not recommended for overnight use. If needed, you can trim the sponge to better fit your anatomy. Removal tends to be more hands-on than with tampons or cups and can feel a little messier, so many people find sponges are best used when they have easy access to a sink or shower.
Disposable Artificial Sponges:
Disposable menstrual sponges are designed for one-time use and come ready straight from the package. To insert, compress the sponge and, if desired, moisten it with water or a little lubricant to make placement easier. These sponges should be changed every 4–6 hours and discarded after use.
Because they don’t require cleaning, disposable sponges are a convenient option for travel or for times when you don’t want to manage the extra care required with reusable options. However, they do create more waste compared to their natural, reusable counterparts.
3. Care
Reusable Sea Menstrual Sponges:
Reusable natural sponges require a little more attention to ensure they stay hygienic and last as long as possible. After each use, they should be rinsed thoroughly and gently cleaned. It’s important to let them air-dry completely before placing them into storage. At the end of your period, they can be sanitised by gently boiling them with a small amount of bicarbonate of soda. With the right care, a natural sponge can last between three to six months. To preserve the delicate fibres, avoid harsh soaps, strong chemicals, or prolonged boiling, as these can cause damage.
Disposable Artificial Sponges:
Disposable sponges, on the other hand, require no cleaning or maintenance. They are designed for single use and can simply be discarded after removal. This makes them a more convenient option, though they lack the longevity of reusable sponges.
4. Environmental Impact
Reusable Sea Menstrual Sponges:
One of the biggest advantages of reusable natural sponges is their sustainability. They are biodegradable and harvested responsibly, allowing the sponge beds to regenerate. There are two types of sponge tampons for periods:
a) Reusable: Natural sea sponge like the sponges from Natural Intimacy (available in Bleached and Unbleached), or Jade & Pearl Sea Pearls (available in Classic or Ultra Soft).
b) Disposable: single use period sponges are made of a synthetic material (usually made of polyurethane, polyester or vegetable cellulose or a combination of these materials) and are thrown away after they have been used. Joy Division sponges or Beppy are disposable options or which come individually wrapped.

For hygiene reasons, only use disposable period sponges like the Joy Division sponges or Beppy.
For prolapse...
