The pelvic floor muscles span between the tailbone and pubic bone. These muscles are usually firm and thick and act as a hammock to support the internal organs of the pelvis, control the release of urine and play a role in sexual function.
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a medical condition where pelvic organs such as the uterus, bowel or bladder collapse or prolapse. Pelvic floor muscles can weaken for many reasons including; aging, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, heavy lifting, high impact sports or due to weight gain. Prolapse can range from mild to severe displacement and it is estimated about half of the women who have had children have some degree of prolapse.
Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor muscles can be trained with targeted exercises. We offer a range of sponges to assist in the management of pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor trainers or exercisers which can assist in improving pelvic floor tone. If you suspect you have prolapse, please consult your GP or an OBY/GYN as soon as possible as the earlier treatment is sought, the better the outcome.
